Fishing the Highwood

This weekend I hope to spend 4 days on the Highwood river with my Dad and whoever else wants to join us. We are leaving at 6 pm on Thursday evening. Sharp.

You might need your own car though.

Head south of Calgary on the #22 and turn west when you arrive at Longview. Head about 35k along #541. There should be a couple campgrounds there. If you come to a place called “Highwood House” you’ve gone too far. Google has a MAP as does a camping company.

As of August 28th, the river was as clear as vodka. The forecast looks good for the weekend, but it looks close to zero degrees at night time.

I’ll be fly fishing this river, and based on some research at the Calgary Fly Fisher’s Forum, here’s a checklist of flies for anyone else thinking about fishing this river, ranked.

Dry/Indicator:
Club Sandwich
Irresistible Adams (Catches rainbows downstream of longview)
Parachute Adams
Royal Wulff
Green Drakes

Wet/Dropper: (1.5 - 2 ft. below)

nymphs, tiny & black ~ (Catches fish up near Highwood House)
Stonefly
Prince

Streamers (6 inches long, dead drift with erratic stripping)

White ~
Black
Brown
Purple

I hope to catch some big ones and post pics to the blog. Gonna be a great weekend.
