Canadians often hear plenty of stories about how cocky and arrogant some Americans can be when they’re abroad, and we take a smug pride in the fact that we wouldn’t ever stoop to such lows as to be insensitive to the relativist cultural values and nuances to be found around the globe.
These Americans are usually typecasted as fat, over-consuming wealthy and white versions of Jabba the Hutt. They expect service and would rather exchange money than exchange stories with the locals.
They are Unapologetic Americans.
They live in a nation that many other people of the world only dream about living in, and they know it.
They don’t have universal healthcare and high taxes, and they like it that way.
But have you ever thought about what it would be like to meet the polar opposite - the Apologetic Americans?
Frankly, these Americans make me sick.
I was just down in Washington at a music festival, and needless to say, the crowd was liberal and artsy, with nary an American flag to be seen. Nope. Not even on Memorial Day long weekend. There were more Oilers flags than American ones at the campground I stayed at.
Apologetic Americans are, in my experience and opinion, one of the worst kinds of Americans you will ever meet. I recall listening last year to that skittle-poppin’ jerkwad Rush Limbaugh as he went off about the “sub-par intellect” of the liberal mindset, and initially, I was shocked. He said these people actually hate their country.
I didn’t believe that yahoo until now.
Judging by just two Americans (not necessarily a represenative of the population at large of course), I’d say Limbaugh is right.
I actually heard two people say words about America I could never find myself saying about Canada. They were:
“God, I hate this country”.
I should have reminded him that terrorists also hate America.
It made me sick to hear those words. No matter who is in power in Canada, I could never speak such words of my happy little Canada. Sure, you can hate the government, you can hate taxes, foreign policy and laws - but your friggin’ country?
I’d almost rather hang out with an unapologietic Yankee than a spineless weasel of an apologetic one any day. These people would leave the US at the drop of the hat if they didn’t have some drug charge keeping them from doing so. Instead of fighting for what they believe to be right, they would rather run.
I’m quite sure there are plenty of Democrats who love their country. Nothing against Americans who move to Canada at all here - I’m just sayin’ that hating one’s country is just a tad extreme.
At least it is for me.
