Dontcha just love this weather?
Dontcha just love the Alberta government’s Natural Gas Rebate Program even more?
I guess you’d have to call it a way of compensating Albertans for the Klein government’s blundering foray into the brave new world of ‘deregulation’…
But what I want to know is… what will Albertans use to heat their homes in 2050 or 2075 and how expensive will it be?
Sure, we’ve got a gas glut now and the producers are crying the blues.
But by 2050, most of our lovely, relatively cheaply-produced natural gas will be be long gone down the Alliance and other pipelines to our American friends.
It’s called Energy Security for Americans.
Remember when the National Energy Board used to require reserving gas supplies for future Canadians before allowing such stalwart Canadian companies as Encana to maximize profits by exporting our gas as quickly as possible?
All our home heating systems in Alberta use natural gas. Will it still be available in 2050? Where will it come from? At what cost?
Will we be forced into strip mining our rich central Alberta farmlands to mine coal for gasification?
Will we be forced to convert our home heating systems to use electricity produced by nuclear power plants? Will there be sufficient Canadian stocks of uranium fuel?
Did the Klein government have a hidden agenda in creating the natural gas rebates program?
Would Albertans be as sanguine about our massive exports of natural gas if we had to pay the true market cost year-round and realized how quickly the stuff is disappearing?
