About:

An Alberta based blog written by an Economist who has lived all over the province. I am an Information Maven, and I try to provide Albertans with information they won't find in their mainstream media. You might not believe it, but there are thousands of stories you will never learn of if you stick to reading your local MSM rag. I am generally apolitical, but am partial to the Green Libertarianism of Henry David Thoreau. I am also responsible for Alberta Blogs, a collection of bloggers united by nothing more than their love of Alberta. I live in Calgary, you can reach me at: aaron.braaten [at] gmail.com, and I'm on Twitter @abraaten.

I Call Bullshit: Obama Reignites Toronto’s Real Estate Market

The Globe & Mail’s latest boost to the collective economic idiocy quotient comes to us, courtesy of Carolyn Ireland’s latest piece entitled: Real estate gets the Obama boost. Several commenters have already pointed out that the article has no clothes, and I figured I’d do the same.

While the United States basks in the warm glow of a new president-elect, many Toronto real estate agents have noticed a pickup in sales in November after a truly dismal October.

Jeffrey McCann, a real estate agent with Sutton Group-Bayview Realty Inc., says Barack Obama’s rise to the Oval Office appears to be one reason people are feeling more sanguine.

“There’s definitely more momentum in the market,” he says. “I think there has been so much negative news out there that anything positive has no border.”

It could just as easily be seasonality, as people try to get into homes before the cold hits. The increase in sales coincides with falling prices, which basically means prices are falling in order to “clear the market”.
