About:

An Alberta based blog written by an Economist who has lived all over the province. I am an Information Maven, and I try to provide Albertans with information they won't find in their mainstream media. You might not believe it, but there are thousands of stories you will never learn of if you stick to reading your local MSM rag. I am generally apolitical, but am partial to the Green Libertarianism of Henry David Thoreau. I am also responsible for Alberta Blogs, a collection of bloggers united by nothing more than their love of Alberta. I live in Calgary, you can reach me at: aaron.braaten [at] gmail.com, and I'm on Twitter @abraaten.

Riots: Iceland, Greece, Russia . . . and now Oakland?

There’s a riot in Oakland, California. Protesters are getting their riot on over police brutality.

Google Trends is showing a slight uptick in searches for “riot” since the year began, but nothing like the French riots of 2005.

This is a familiar pattern that will play out in 2009. It seems many authorities, from Russia to the IMF have been concerned that riots would break out over the economic crisis. Iceland has done it, but Greece is another story. The riots in Greece had their roots in police brutality.

I think this will be a pattern this year - riots over police brutality and economic inequality.
