What do Swine Flu Researchers have in common with Economists?

The Atlantic has succeeded where the mainstream media has failed when it comes to H1N1 coverage. Turns out there are some top researchers with deeply skeptical views of the seasonal flu vaccine. It’s not just a bunch of anonymous internet whackos hammering out conspiracy theories on blogs.

The Atlantic: Does the Vaccine Matter?
The skeptical scientists can’t get the word out because either nobody wants to hear it, or their data are incompatible with certain disciplinary doctrines and are therefore shunned from top journals. This is exactly the type of sociological pattern that was present in the world of economics throughout the recent financial crisis. There were many credible economists warning of financial doom ahead, but their doomish forecasts were incompatible with things like Dow 14k, the doctrine of the Housing Bubble or any other entrenched economic belief.
